What is a peptide?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Proteins are longer chains of the same building blocks. Many hormones that cells use to send messages are peptides, including GLP-1 and growth hormone–releasing hormone.
Because peptides are made of amino acids, the digestive tract often breaks them down if they are swallowed. That is one reason several approved peptide medicines are given as injections rather than tablets. Oral peptide products exist when the manufacturer has solved that problem for a specific molecule — it is not a general rule you can apply to research chemicals.
Signaling, not slogans
A peptide medicine usually works by fitting a receptor — a protein on or in cells — and changing a signal. That can be useful in a defined disease. It can also cause harm if the signal is pushed in the wrong people or at the wrong exposure.
Online marketing often treats 'peptide' as a single lifestyle category. Scientifically, semaglutide, tesamorelin, and BPC-157 are not interchangeable just because they are peptides.
